Industry Standards for Utility Excavations

Industry standards have been developed for working in excavations.

Following consultation with supply chain companies, it was identified that working in excavations is an area of commonality across employers and contracts. As a result, Energy & Utility Skills worked in collaboration with employers to develop a consistent set of standards, which clearly define expectations in terms of performance and knowledge for individuals working in excavations.

The following industry standards were developed:

• Locate Utility Services
• Implement Safe (Digging) Excavating Practices
• Install, Inspect and Remove Timber Support Systems
• Install, Inspect and Remove Steel Support Systems
• Install, Inspect and Remove Proprietary Support Systems

Consequently, the current Utility Excavations scheme and all Recognition of Learning Programmes (RLP) that fall under this are now closed. Information for the new Utility Excavations scheme is available here.
