08 Sep 2017

As part of our continued ambition to deliver fit for purpose industry accreditation solutions, we are currently investing in the improvement of the BESC AME Scheme.

As part of our continued ambition to deliver fit for purpose industry accreditation solutions, we are currently investing in the improvement of the BESC AME (Basic Electrical Safety Competence for Access, Movement and Egress) scheme across all three areas: substations, overhead lines and underground cables.

BESC AME is popular and well-regarded by industry, so we wanted to update the requirements to ensure the scheme keeps apace with developments in the industry. Following feedback we're also introducing a much-needed knowledge test for learners to ensure that the underpinning knowledge required to undertake the more practical aspects of the scheme are explicitly assessed.

Initial focus on substations

We are currently working closely with the BESC AME Working Group in relation to just one area of the BESC AME specification, substations. We have both developed a revised specification and an online knowledge test to underpin knowledge requirements. We are currently piloting this revised scheme and test with selective providers.

Following on from the pilot programme, we will be looking to review the other areas: overhead lines and underground cables. We intend to introduce this new assessment approach across the board.

Pilot underway

We are piloting the new BESC AME Substations course until October 2017 and then aim to launch the updated course by the end of 2017. The new BESC AME course in substations will replace the existing course from its launch. Further information regarding the transition to the new Substations course will be communicated to you all by email and will be available on the EUSR website closer to the time.
